Create Your Own Ring Styling Dishes For Less Than a $1
I’m definitely not the crafty type. I’ll pay someone to make even a seemingly easy project for me. But when I saw a fellow photographer post a little tutorial about making their own clay ring styling dishes, I thought I’d give it a go! I had been eyeing some pretty white ring dishes for some time now, but couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger at $50 for 3. Below is how you can make your own for less than a dollar per dish!
What You’ll Need
- Oven clay
- I got mine from Hobby Lobby here. Each pack is about $2.50ea and makes about 2 large dishes + 2 small dishes (depending on the thickness of your dishes)
- Cupcake pan
- Rolling pin
- Water glass
- Parchment paper
Creating Your Dishes
Step 1: Break your clay in half (2 segments).

Step 2. Massage and roll your clay segments in to a smooth ball

Step 3. With the rolling pin, roll out your clay ball on top of your parchment paper

Step 4. Using a glass, cut the clay into a circle. Save the extra scraps to use for the smaller dishes. I used a whiskey glass for the larger dishes and a champagne glass for the smaller ones. You’ll most likely want to smooth your edges a bit after cutting.

Step 5. Place clay into cupcake tin and tap down the center to create the dish shape

Step 6. Bake in the oven at 275 degrees F for 15 mins
Step 7. Let them cool, and boom! You’re done!

A Few Notes
Quick heads up that the white clay can be a bit tricky to work with. It’ll pick up anything on your surfaces or hands, so be sure everything is well cleaned beforehand.
Try swirling some of your clays together to create a marbled effect. I did this by rolling two small snake-shaped pieces of each color and then twisting them together thoroughly before rolling it out.
